When my niece Megan lost her parents at age ten, I made a promise—to buy her wedding dress one day. It was a small comfort in a sea of grief. I helped raise her, watching her grow into a tough, determined young woman. Life didn’t unfold the way we all hoped—by 21, she had three kids, no degree, and a partner named Tyler who never seemed to find his footing. One day, Megan lit up with news: she and Tyler were finally getting married. She reminded me of my old promise and showed me two dresses—one $7,500, the other nearly $5,000. I was stunned.
